Do you have issues holding onto your glasses? Nothing is more frustrating than finally finding that perfect pair of glasses, only to lose them or break them shortly after purchase. Or maybe you can’t seem to find that perfect pair that actually fits your face? Well thanks to 3D printing finding that perfect pair of glasses is now a possibility, and if you have issues holding onto your glasses, don’t worry you can now just print out a new pair.
For those who are not familiar with this technology, 3D printing, which is also called additive manufacturing, is the process of constructing a 3D solid object from a digital file. The virtual design is either made into a CAD (Computer Aided Design) file using a 3D modeling program, or can be created with the use of a 3D scanner, which will literally produce a digital copy of an object. This scanned digital copy then can be inserted into a 3D modeling program for editing. Once it’s time to print, the creation of the 3D object is attained by using an additive process to print, which lays down successive layers of material until the whole object is created. Pretty cool, huh?
3D printers can print out all types of products, allowing the buyer the ability to have customization options within many areas; with 3D printers you can print-out footwear, jewelry, glasses, building materials, mechanical parts, and even another 3D printer! If you happen to have the cash and are tech savvy, investing in a 3D printer might be wise. With a 3D printer if you can print your own pair that will fit your face measurements, and if you happen to lose your glasses it’s not a big deal as you can just reprint another pair. If this is not a viable option for you, there are manufacturers online that will print one out for you. Your options for customization will differ between each manufacturer, but most will allow you to choose frame type, color, and some will even give you the ability to add and customize text! With this new technology, manufacturers are able to take images of the customers face, and by using an algorithm, it sends the information to the 3D printer, which then alters the original frame design. The ability to print out a functional pair of glasses is an amazing breakthrough, as it allows for more flexibility, less production time, and more happy customers!
