Last month we had an article explaining the importance of wearing sunglasses during the winter, but did you know that your four legged friend can wear a pair as well? That’s right, there are sunglasses for dogs and they are called Doggles. A hit with dog owners world-wide, Doggles are designed to comfortably fit a dog, while protecting their sensitive eyes from dust, wind, and the sun. Doggles started back in 1997 by Roni and Ken Di Lullo from an idea they had one day at the dog park. The couple was inspired when they noticed that their dog Midnight was squinting, and that Midnight kept missing the Frisbee during a game of fetch. Determined, Roni created sunglasses from a pair of sports goggles and retrofitted it to Midnight’s head, and it turned out to be a great success! Midnight’s Frisbee performance improved, plus everyone at the park loved Midnight’s shades! Who doesn’t love a dog in glasses?
Doggles has gone from a DIY invention to a product that is now mass produced; Doggles is available in two models, the Originalz and the ILS with interchangeable lenses. Both models feature shatterproof, anti-fog lenses that block out 100% of the UV rays, and with its adjustable head and chin straps Doggles can fit a range of dog types comfortably, from Chihuahuas to Great Danes, while remaining securely fastened to the dog’s head. Considered to be beneficial for blind or visually impaired dogs, Doggles allows for prescription lenses to be used for those dogs that have undergone cataract surgery and lens removal. Doggles is also part of the uniform for dogs serving in the U.S. military as they help keep out the dust and fine sand that’s typically found blowing in Iraq and Afghanistan. Doggles come in an assortment of colored frames, allowing you and your pooch to color coordinate; so this winter when you step outside make sure both you and your dog are wearing sunglasses to protect your eyes from those harmful UV rays!
